English contains many words adopted from other languages. In fact, experts estimate 80% of English words originated elsewhere. The biggest influence on English vocabulary is Latin. An examination of the 20,000 most used words reveals 5,000 words contain prefixes and over 80% of these use one of only fourteen of the many different prefixes available. By learning these important prefixes, you can improve your mastery of the English language. You will be able to discern at least a partial meaning of words you encounter for the first time by understanding the basic meaning of its prefix.

Listed below are the most used prefixes, their meanings, and example words. To get the most out of seeing these prefixes, copy them into a notebook. Write down the prefix, its definition, and several examples of its use. You can add examples by looking for more in your dictionary. Practice using the words in your writing and speaking. Look for words with these prefixes in newspaper, magazine, or books and underline them. The more you engage the word in some way (writing, speaking, or underlining), the better you will remember it.

Ab- (away from) abhor, abject, abnormal, absolve

Ad- (to, toward) adapt, adept, adhere, adhesion

Be- (on all sides, overly) bedeck, beset, besmear, besprinkle

Com-, con-, co- (with, together) comfort, commence, compel, complain

De- (reversal, undoing, downward) deceit, decipher, default, deliver

Dis- dif- (not, reversal) differ, difficulty, disable, dishonor

Em-, en- (in, into, to cover or contain) embrace, embroider, engage, engrave

Ex- (out of, former) exalt, examine, example, excerpt

In- (into, not) incline, inconsistent, indecisive, induce

Pre- (before) prejudice, prepare, prescribe, preserve, pretend

Pro- (in favor of, before) proclaim, procure, produce, profound

Re- (again, restore) renew, resolve, reveal, revert

Sub- (under, beneath) subcontract, subculture, subject, subordinate

Un- (do the opposite of) unravel, unroll, unseat, unskilled

Although Latin is considered a "dead" language by many, it lives on in the English vocabulary. Not only do many existing words originate from Latin, many new words are constructed from Latin prefixes, suffixes, and roots. New words to describe or name scientific processes or discoveries are often formed from Latin. Think of words like computer, internet, and digital radio. For digital television, you need to be familiar with both Latin and Greek, the other big contributor to the English language.

You can learn more about Greek contributions to the English vocabulary in my next article titled "It was Greek to Me: Improving Your English by Knowing Greek Roots".

Exitos en Video

Customer Review: Sound engeneer where are you?
The sound quality is horrendous, Mana make a lot of money off there fans I could not believe my ears. I end up play the cd and the videos Simultaneously to be happy. A live concert DVD is needed MANA.
Customer Review: Great Mexican rock band, great songs but...
When they made the DVD, there are some things they should have changed on it. If you're a Mana fan, you'll know all the songs. One live track, a cover of "El Rey" filmed in Montreux Switerland shows of Alex Gonzalez's drumming, something that doesn't come through on their studio tracks. As far as the videos themselves go, you see it going from something that is borderline public access video, to some embarrassing videos that are kind of humorous, to a more polished look towards the "Suenos Liquidos" videos, where it ends. Nothing from "Revolucion de Amor" or their song with Carlos Santana "Corazon Espinado" (which is on Carlos' "Supernatural" DVD) is included. Here's the complaints that I found more annoying than anything: the cover of Led Zeppelin's "Fool in the Rain", straight off of the "Econium" tribute video is them in the studio talking about recording the song. It either should be the full song or in the "extras". It's something that you wind up forwarding and gets annoying real fast. "Clavado En Un Bar" has 5 minutes of the "making of", yet you can't skip the making of, you have to forward it. Another one that belongs in the "extras". It's something that we should be able to enjoy with the TV on or off. The "in betweens" can get a little noisy at times but isn't a big deal. It's not in Surround Sound, but you can hear it playing in all the speakers. I'd like to see them revamp this one a little bit to make it more "DVD-friendly" and put out a live DVD which shows off how great they are in concert. Even if you don't understand Spanish, the music alone is good enough to enjoy...

Someone once asked Edgar Cayce if others could do what he did, and he answered, "Yes, if you are willing to pay the price." For some, this referred to the material sacrifices Mr. Cayce and his family made to pursue his work. Yet there is another level of meaning to his reply. Many of his statements about intuitive or psychic development pointed to the necessity for personal transformation, not merely the learning of a technique. One could learn the technique of automatic writing, for example, and produce works of wonder. Although Mr. Cayce acknowledged that automatic writing was a valid channel for bringing in new truths, he consistently advised people away from it and toward the alternative, alternative, inspirational writing. This latter method requires, however, more than learning the trick of getting your hand to write while you're not paying attention. It requires one to learn how to enter into the consciousness of an ideal, and then surrender to the flow of that awareness as it moves into the writing phase. The caterpillar doesn't become a butterfly by pasting on wings, but rather by allowing itself to melt into liquid which then crystallizes as a butterfly.

I've given students a taste of this kind of transformation through dance. Typically I use Cayce's favorite music for harmonizing, Strauss's "Blue Danube Waltz." Don't try to "do a dance," I suggest," but rather allow the music to dance you!" It is a fun way to explore the difference between making an effort to perform a trick and to enter into the mystery of oneness. In her book Connections: The Five Threads of Intuitive Wisdom (Tarcher/Penguin), Gabrielle Roth presents a similar self-transformational approach to intuition. The author, an artist of the dance and a respected exemplar of someone living the intuitive life, shares personal stories of her struggles, transformations, and discoveries. There is another life to live, more real than what typically passes for living, and there's a divine human being ready to live that alternative life, she writes, provided we can escape the addiction to the consciousness of the separate self that must be in control.

"To fully realize our intuitive abilities," she writes, "we need to be instinctive, intimate, intent, integral, and inspired. Each of these energies is a facet of intuition, our connection to the divine force that moves all things. The problem happens when we stop trusting its supreme intelligence, intelligence, when we allow our intuition to be overwhelmed and diminished by the loud, reactive defensive voices of the ego."

By instinctive, she means the wisdom of the body. A good example is the way the body can naturally move to music if it's allowed. Wisdom can emerge from the dance, as you can discover for yourself. When you are troubled by a situation and don't know what to do, if meditation doesn't help, try dancing! When you sit back down, exhausted and spent, you may be surprised to find that you now know how to move past your predicament.

By intimacy, she means the momentary dissolving of boundaries that create separations between ourselves and the life around us. Learning to listen, to experience a heart connection with other life forms, is a form of cooperation with life that supports intuitive awareness.

By intent, she means the ability to embrace change, even chaos, while knowing intuitively that one has an inner connection with one's destiny that will shake off potential mistakes and alert one to the symbolic cues life uses to call us forward.

By integrity, she doesn't mean being right or good, but rather she asks that we be real, authentic, not weakened by contradictions, but strengthened by the paradoxes we can accept. It's not about what we say, but what we are aware of within. Being honest with ourselves, having the innocence of a pure heart, gives us courage to trust intuition rather than doubt it and suspect it of personal contamination.

By inspiration, she means the intuition of Spirit. It is the ability to allow life to breathe you, to move you along your natural path of soul expression. Everyone has a purpose, a calling, a destiny. With intention we can set an ideal, and then allow the Spirit of Life to move us toward the fulfillment of that ideal. Very often life will take us to a new level of awareness, to an even greater ideal, provided we are willing to be moved. Once again, dancing to inspirational music is often a great awakener, a wonderful meditation on being moved by Spirit.

Gabrielle Roth's personal confessions - exuberant, earthy, wild, sensitive - of her experience with intuition echo the description of the spiritual path described in both idealized and practical terms by Edgar Cayce. More than learning intuitive skills, the goal is personal tr ansformation that allows one to "express the face" of the Creator in one's own individual manner.

Hector proposes to Maribel and she accepts. When Rubi finds out that Alejandro isn't rich as she thought, she decides to break up with him and do everything in order to marry rich Hector, and finally get the life she always dreamed of.
Customer Review: The edition is good, but the music is so boring.
The soap opera Rubi started so good, it was so quickly that in every episode you can see something exciting, unfortunately, with the huge succes of the soap opera Televisa ordered more episodes and there's when we had the problem, When we start to see the beginning of the end: the illness of Hector (then alejandro operates him but because of Rubi he let him die accidentaly). Instead of that, magically Hector gets healed, he gets a lover (Yadhira Carrillo), Rubi meet the Count (Manuel Landeta) and Alejandro have a lot of trouble in the hospital because of some fraudulent things. That part of the story is not as cool as the first episodes, they cut A LOT of secondary characters that actually their story wasn't interesting. That's why i think is a very good edition.... EXCEPT: For the music, the main theme (La descarada) was so goood, this new one is pathetic, and the score was also incredible, but especially the song from the dramatic moments. (In the special episode you can hear it in some of the dramatic moments, for example Sonia's death, when Rubi runs to the beach with her wedding dress, when Maribel watch Rubi at the airport with Hector, etc, etc. Instead of that good song they use a very boring theme, it doesn't transmitt the same emotion and tension. Hope we can see a new version of the dvd but with the real music and with more scenes and extras. By the way the extras are very cool, the finale of the original series in black and white, the special of rubi's niece, the press conference of Rubi, the only missed the original trailers (THEY'RE SO COOL, check them out on youtube)
Customer Review: rubi 2
i'm wondering if they ever going to do part 2 where her neice is twice as free spirited and dangerous lol

Unlimited music downloads available on numerous websites today can make any music lover drool over. Dont lose your senses, though. The market of unlimited music downloads is huge and still expanding, so the question is not where to find these sites, but how to get the best deal and quality without posing your money, computer and yourself at risk.

Obviously, all the sites offering unlimited music downloads are not the same. While there are a few genuine ones, the sad and scary fact is most of those sites are fraud, using the offer of unlimited music downloads as a lure to get either money or sensitive data from you. And the peer-to-peer sites, giving away free unlimited music downloads, are notorious for malware and viruses of all sorts any downloaded file can lodge in your computer.

Take your time to search around and see what those incredible promises of unlimited music downloads are about. Read the sites terms and conditions. Is there a proof that the songs they supply are legal and copyright issue free? The last thing you want is to become a law offender.

There are too many websites giving away unlimited music downloads absolutely free of cost mostly illegally (though claiming the opposite), on the basis of sharing. Usually they are full of aggressive flashing ads and irritating pop-ups, making it difficult to navigate the site and find what you want. Also, some of them may try to trick you into paying for software you will need in order to manage your unlimited music downloads, while the software is available free of cost on other sites.

Check if you can browse the song library. If the site asks you to subscribe first, it is very likely a scam. Some legal and reputed websites may request you to download their software in order to see the selection of music downloads, but they will neither charge you, nor ask you to subscribe or register. Most genuine websites will also allow you to listen to sample tracks to make sure this is what you were looking for and to check the quality.

Compare pricing for membership or subscription, check if there are any extra charges, say, for burning a CD. Stay away from too unrealistic offers of unlimited music downloads. Such website can collect your money and instead of the promised lifetime membership just disappear overnight. Therefore, it also makes sense to check the sites reputation find out how long they have been in business, how many members they have, read reviews and clients feedback.

If you have no time to research, try a quick check for a possible scam: navigate your mouse over other major links on the site, e.g. Download Now or Music if you see the same URL that the homepage has, better search somewhere else.

The online industry of unlimited music downloads is exposed to various tricks and unethical practices, but it doesnt mean that you cant enjoy your favorite music. Unlimited music downloads can become a fantastic experience if you take simple steps to secure yourself and prevent scam attempts.

Why not pop over to my blog and check out some of the most popular and reliable download services?

Over the past several years, reggaeton has emerged from the underground dance scene to storm onto the urban music landscape. "Reggaeton: Hot Latin Hip Hop" construction kits give you the power to create music with this scorching new Latin sound. Producer Josquin des Pres, along with his Track Star Studios team, once again calls on his vast experience in producing current Hip Hop and Latin music to deliver this authentic collection. If you have dreams of performing in the Winchester theatre royal, you have to consider that acting classes aren't cheap, and sometimes you even have to pay a hefty sum for being in a showcase, without any guarantee of getting an agent. Make sure you have enough money set aside for your acting needs.

Dance classes can also be additional training, though acting is what you will need most. Audition for school plays and community theatre for the experience!

I think they both have their merits, and they're both just so extraordinarily different with entirely different energies. For people who have never done theater, it's a difficult thing, because you have to be focused for an hour-and-a-half to two hours, whereas in film, if you shoot more than a page-and-a-half all at once, that's a pretty long scene. Then again, some people just learn things differently than others. Use whatever method best serves you.

By contrast, when you project a facade that differs from what you think and who you really are inside, others sense the disparity. When your speaking and who you are being don't match, it keeps you from being heard and decreases your personal effectiveness. It's time to imagine a different world. When doing a scene, if I say I'm at a restaurant, every single audience member could have a different image of where that scene takes place. One person might think fast food while another thinks fine dining.

For those looking for a job in acting, finding a talent agent is important. But, technology gives us a chance to create what we want instead of waiting for a call. Many people have found agents after they got their first gig. If a casting director really likes you and thinks you have the right look they will call you in for an audition. Actors, for instance, audition with directors and casting agents, hoping to show that they can play the role for which they're auditioning. Musicians hand out tapes and CDs of their music to convince nightclub and theater owners to book them for gigs.

The Winchester theatre royal and Army museums two fantastic sites to visit.

Customer Review: Be prepared! No music!
It was really not clear when purchasing this CD that it is only spoken word. I was at least able to determine this by reading the cover before taking off the plastic. How disappointing, especially for someone relatively new to Coldplay's music.
Customer Review: Don't understand.
I just don't get it. These reviews don't even make sense. It would also be nice if the track list was posted for potential buyers.

A number of classical and modern composers have believed in a direct correlation between notes of the musical scale and colors. Classical and modern composers fond of relating colors to their music include Liszt, Beethoven, Schubert and Rimsky-Korsakoff. Liszt described his dramatic intentions for his music with decorative phrases: "More pink here;" "This is too black;" "I want it all azure". Beethoven is reported to have referred to B minor as the black key. Schubert is said to have compared the E minor key to "a maiden robed in white and with a rose-red bow on her breast". And Rimsky-Korsakoff associated the color of sunlight with the key of C major and a strawberry red with the note F sharp.

A. Wallace Rimington (1854-1918) was a prominent instrument inventor, writer and artist in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Rimington wrote extensively on the analogy between color and sound in his book Colour-Music: The Art of Mobile Color, published in 1911. Rimington, like a number of other theorists, constructed a scale of direct color-music analogies. Most importantly, Rimington set forth and thoroughly discussed what he considered to be the major points of resemblance between color and music.

In the first place, Rimington begins, both color and sound are produced by vibrations that act upon the eye and ear respectively. Secondly, both color and music are limited to particular ranges of visible or audible vibrations. Third, both create their effects through changeable levels of harmony and discord. Fourth, both tints and notes give pleasure or distress to the audience through a variety of combinations and sequences. Fifth, both color and music can also be combined with other art forms for a heightened experience. Sixth, rhythm can be used to add interest in both artistic and musical compositions.

Finally, changes in dynamics can be created in color through increases in the strength of the hue. This is similar to the potential for increasing tone strength through volume changes in music. Many of Rimington's ideas were not new, as these were probably some of the very issues pondered by the Greeks in ancient days as well as by alchemists, mystics and philosophers throughout history.

Potential is a key component in the ability to master success. Yet, have you ever thought about the 3 qualities that are needed to temper your own potential?

Temper comes from the Latin word temparare that means to regulate. In modern times, the word has come to mean to harden such as in metal.

Herbert Bayard Swope wrote: You never will be the person you can be, if pressure, tension and discipline are taken out of of your life.

These 3 qualities will regulate your potential, will temper your potential and ultimately contribute to your ability to master success or the continued inability to master success.

Pressure is a quality that molds individuals. How you respond to various pressures showcases your potential. Pressure can reveal certain potential strengths that you did not know that you had.

To understand the word tension begins by learning its origin. Tension is also Latin in its origin and comes from the word tendere that means to stretch. How much can you stretch yourself? Tension is the result constantly being stretched.

With the W.A.Y. S.M.A.R.T. or S.M.A.R.T. goal criteria, the R means to construct your goals realistically high so that you have to stretch. When achievement comes easy, we as humans have a tendency to become complacent.

Discipline is another Latin word and comes from two words: dis means apart and capere means hold. Today discipline involves training that develops self control or character in which you hold yourself apart from the rest. Effective leadership or rather self-leadership is really about self-control and character.

When you look at your own personal and professional achievements, if you removed the pressure, the tension and the discipline from your life would you have these successes?

Now take a look at your life from a different lens. What would happen if you applied a little more pressure, tension and discipline to your life? Would you have tapped into more of your potential and realize even a greater ability to master success?

Customer Review: Close to being brilliant!!
"If you die your son will be like us. Fatherless." From a film-makers point of view, this film is a daunting task. It has many characters but still grasps your attention. There are so many very good foreign language films nowadays. I thought Tsotsi was top notch and now, City of Men. I mean, wow! The characters in the film are young men involved in gangs, carefully woven in their anger and paranoid youth is a sense of dread and being doomed. Excellent drama. This is a must watch for anyone who's remotely interested. There will be a scene where you will laugh really really hard. There's a little kid in the film that you'll want to cuddle. You'll never want to live the character's life though. Also ... it actually made me think about something most men don't ever think of. It's about fatherhood. Before I become incoherent, I'll just end by saying, this film is going to do really well and is a must must watch. Thankyou for reading.
Customer Review: EXCELLENT FOLLOW-UP TELEVISION SERIES IN THE SPIRIT OF CITY OF GOD
This series does not follow the exact story or timeline as the movie City Of God but it takes place in Rio de Janeiro in the Favela. I was entertained and pleased with the acting, cinematography, and realness. I almost felt that I was there and I could have been there in my younger years.
