Laila Ali's inspiring career as a boxer, following in her famous father's footsteps, has only been enhanced by her life and accomplishments outside of the ring.

Laila Ali was born December 30, 1977 to former Heavyweight Champion of the World Muhammed Ali and his third wife, Veronica Porsche Anderson. She is currently the women's boxing Triple Crown Super Middleweight Champion as well as a contestant on ABC's popular Dancing with the Stars.

Ali earned a degree in Business Management at Santa Monica College and then went on to own and operate a successful nail salon in California. She had planned to attend the University of Southern California Business School, but after watching women's boxing on television for the first time, she decided to become a boxer. Approximately a year later, Ali sold her business and started training to become a professional fighter.

Ali made her professional boxing debut on October 8, 1999, at the age of 21. She insisted that the press not record videos of this fight. Her opponent, April Fowler, was a 0-1 fighter who worked as a waitress. 31 seconds into the 1st round, she knocked out her opponent, April Fowler. After Ali's pro debut, she told reporters that she had made her father proud, and that she would knock out every one of her opponents and that it was a promise.

Born: December 30, 1977
Died: --
Famous For: Undefeated World Boxing Champion; Daughter of former Heavyweight Champion of the World Muhammed Ali; named one of People Magazine's Most 100 Beautiful People of 2007.
Key Accomplishments: Earned a degree in Business Management from Santa Monica College; Undefeated World Boxing Champion, Author; Model.
Significant Quote: "There's so many other things that I'm talented at, so many things that I could be doing, that I wouldn't be boxing if it wasn't what I loved to do."
Fun Quote: "I didn't even know that women boxed. And then when I saw it for the first time I wanted to do it."

Ali went on to win her next 8 fights by knockout, and in October of 2000, she beat the then-reigning champion Kendra Lendhart. She won 3 more belts in 2002. On August 17, 2002, she became the new IBA super middleweight champion after defeating Suzy Taylor in the second round. Then, on November 8, 2002, she won the WIBA and the IWBF supper middleweight titles after her opponent, Valerie Mahfood, forced the referee to stop the action at 1:14 of round eight. Next, she had to beat Christy Martin, who was considered the best female fighter in the sport. On August 23rd, 2003, Ali knocked Martin down for the first time in 50 professional bouts, and stopped her in the fourth round.

In her last fight, on February 3rd, 2006, Ali knocked out her opponent, Gwendolyn O'Neal, in just 56 seconds. The bout, which was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, was attended by Nelson Mandela. Ali had the opportunity to meet him prior to the fight.

On February 20, 2007, ABC announced that Ali would participate in the fourth season of Dancing with the Stars. Her partner is Maksim Chmerkivskiy, and together they received the first 10 from judge Len Goodman for their rumba.

Ali also wrote a motivational book, which is called Reach!. She wrote the book to help inspire other young women. In it, she uses her own experiences and challenges as examples for her readers. She also loves to cook, enjoys Pilates, and has done some modeling, including appearances in Sports Illustrated, People, Ebony, Glamour, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Essence, ESPN the Magazine, and Time. Ali is currently engaged to former pro football player Curtis Conway. They plan to wed in July, 2007.

90s dance music

Mindbodyandsoul

If you are a songwriter, you may sometimes feel like you're in a rut, like you keep coming up with the same basic ideas and situations to write about. One way to break out of this endless loop is to purposely write a song dealing with something lightweight, funny, or just plain strange.

Let's face it. Most pop and rock-type songs are about one and only one subject: good old-fashioned L-O-V-E. That's right, in music it's always boy meets girl, boy loves girl, boy loses girl, singing about it the whole time. There are songs about being lonely and songs about being trapped. There are songs about good relationships, and even more songs about the others. And of course, there's the physical side of things.

Back in the Ancient Days (i.e. the 50s and early 60s), most of the songs were about love all right, but there were always two or three "novelty songs" on the charts and on the radio. The very first song I remember learning to sing along with was "Witch Doctor," by David Seville, with its evocative chorus, "Oo ee oo ah ah, ting tang, walla walla bing bang." Good stuff. There was also "The Purple People Eater," written by Barry Cryer, about a creepy alien who....well, you remember. And who can forget the Chipmunks? (Especially since they're apparently still around.)

Some songs were basically about love, but with a novel take on the subject. Does anyone remember Dodie Stevens singing "Pink Shoe Laces," written by Mickie Grant?

He wears tan shoes with pink shoelaces

A polka dot vest and man oh man

Tan shoes with pink shoelaces

And a big Panama with a purple hat band

It's a little hard to picture the guy she's singing about, but you have to admit they're novel lyrics!

Laugh At Me

There just don't seem to be as many humorous or novelty songs around any more, unless I'm looking for laughs in all the wrong places. As a songwriter, you can take it as a challenging exercise to write at least one song that has an noticeably light touch. But where would you get an idea for such a song? Don't make me laugh! There are ideas all around. The next time your friend cracks you up, make a mental note of what you were joking about and what she said. Odds are you can build a song around it! (I'm serious. This works.)

If someone (maybe you) tells a funny story that has everyone in stitches, guess what? That's another possible subject for a song. You must have heard the ultimate story-song, "Alice's Restaurant," by Arlo Guthrie. Your story doesn't have to be as involved as that one to make for a good song. And feel free to fudge the facts! It's a song, not testimony. Use your imagination. Embellish.

People on TV are always saying things that could be song titles or lines from songs, if you'll just set your ears to listen for them. I've written a lot of songs based on things people said on TV. One of them is "Shut Up and Dance," which was something someone said on an otherwise lame sitcom I saw one night. You can listen to the song here.

As soon as I heard that phrase, I thought it would make a good call-and-response chorus, going back and forth between "shut up and dance" and something else. Once I started writing the verses, I got it all written right away, which is rare for me. I usually have trouble with the third verse, especially when there is a tight pattern of rhyme and rhythm. I really got into being this frustrated guy who just wants to dance. I could have written even more verses if I'd needed them!

Something you might find interesting about this song is that the chord pattern in the bridge is the same as the chorus. I can't remember whether I did that on purpose (probably not), but I can't remember another song where that's true.

Anyway, the point is, if I can do it you can too. Unless you're in a Norwegian death metal band or something, your music is sure to benefit from a touch of humor, a dash of wit. Go for it!

Dips, Lifts, and Solos to Spice up Your Salsa

Dips, Lifts, and Solos to Spice up Your Salsa

Featuring: Lisa Perez and Dave Morgan

Directed by Lee Soto Edited by Dave Morgan Distributed by Barrio Records
Customer Review: Weeeeeeell.....
The dips and lifts part is good. There isn't much instruction for the woman on this video other than curl your arm, keep clean lines, and other few things pointed out. I guess if you have a good leader and you are a good follower you wouldn't need much. I was disappointed with the solo part. I was expecting more instruction but she just does her thing and i guess you are supposed to learn by watching. I really would have preferred a breakdown. They did include a breakdown in the lifts that follow the solo. Overall, its pretty good, especially for the men or anyone leading, but found a little lacking on the woman's part.
Customer Review: Good selection
I would recommend this tape to anyone out there. The moves are excellant and well presented. If anything the lighting could have been better and there was too much space on the set such that the people seem to be too far back and you can't see their facial details. These are minor details however in the dance scheme of things. Good work overall.

The music at your wedding reception can play a big part in how much your guests enjoy the reception. Every song played brings on a unique emotion and memory for every person in the room and the mood of the room as a whole. Some people love a certain song whilst others might find it nostalgic. Songs that are chosen during the reception can reflect your own style of music taste and the type of atmosphere you want to create. The right song selections will have your guests relaxed during the formalities and partying when it's time to get their groove on!

Below is a general wedding reception timeline. It is entirely up to the Bride & Groom which traditions and music they want to incorporate into their wedding.

I have listed 5 songs for each wedding event to give you an idea of what has been popular at past weddings...

Cocktail / Pre Dinner Drinks Music

This is best as classical, jazz or various modern music usually at a quiet and relaxing volume. Some song title suggestions are.

Jack Johnson - No Other Way

Jamie Cullam - I Get a kick out of you

Eva Cassidy - Fever

Norah Jones - The Long Day is Over

Van Morrison - Into the Mystic

Bridal Party Introduction

This works well as an upbeat styled song that people can clap & make some noise to as the Bridal Party, Bride & Groom make their entrance into the reception venue. Some song titles would be..

U2 - Beautiful Day

Jagged Edge - Let's Get Married

The Monkees - I'm a Believer

Dire Straits - Money for Nothing

James Brown - I Feel Good

Dinner & Easy Listening Music

If there is a mixed generation of guests, all genres of easy listening music works well during dinner. These can be the favourite easy listening songs of the Bride and Groom.

Some song suggestions would be..

Sting - Fields of Gold

Ray Charles - I Got a Woman

Crowded House - Don't Dream it's Over

Chris Isaak - Wicked Game

Elton John - Your Song

Cake Cutting

The cake cutting song can be a favourite of the Bride and Groom. A slow tempo, romantic song works well for this part of the reception. Songs that have sugar and sweet references have been popular at previous weddings. Some songs used at past weddings include..

Marvin Gaye - How Sweet it is

Archies - Sugar Sugar

K-Ci and Jojo - All my Life

Queen - You're my best friend

Michael Buble - The way you look tonight

First Dance / Bridal Waltz

The first dance is traditionally the most important song of your wedding reception. This is the first dance of the newly married couple as husband and wife. You can learn a specific dance for this song be it a traditional waltz or the Bride & Groom's favourite slow dance song. If you are using live entertainment for your first dance, make sure you hear a rehearsal / recording of the song that way you know what to expect. Their version may sound a lot different to the original if it's a cover. Some song suggestions are..

Savage Garden - Truly Madly Deeply

Etta James - At Last

Van Morrison - Have I Told you Lately

Enrique Iglesias - Hero

Nick Cave - Into my arms

Father and Daughter Dance and the Mother and Son Dance

The Father and Daughter Dance and Mother and Son Dance represents a dance with the Bride and her Father and Groom and his Mother. This can be made as a "parents of the bride and groom's dance" after the Bride and Grooms first dance. Some song titles include..

Elvis Presley - Memories

Temptations - My Girl

Paul Simon - Father and Daughter

Natalie Cole - L-O-V-E

Elvis Presley - Always on my mind

Dancing Music

A Good DJ or Party band will keep a nice balance between tactful (not so cheesy) and fun songs to keep the dancefloor moving. It's a good idea to give the entertainment a few "must plays", "play if you cans" and "do not play" songs. Some dance floor song titles include..

Outkast - Hey ya

Bob Sinclair - Love Generation

Beatles - Twist and Shout

Elvis vs JXL - A little less conversation

Michael Jackson - Blame it on the Boogie

Anniversary Dance

The longest married couple at the wedding reception can have their own special slow dance tribute. This is great to recognise their length of marriage and an opportunity for a another slow dance.

Bouquet Toss

Traditionally, the single and un-married ladies gather around as the Bouquet is tossed by the bride. Whoever catches the bouquet is the next in-line to get married. This can accompany a game of some sort where the winner receives the bouquet also. Some song ideas for the Bouquet Toss are..

Cheryl Crow - All I Wanna Do

Pussycat Dolls - Don't Cha

Shania Twain - Man I Feel like Woman

Ani Difranco - Wishin & Hopin

No Doubt - Just a Girl

Garter Removal & Toss

As the Garter is removed by the Groom, a sexy song can be played. This can also accompany a game of some sort where the winner receives the Garter. Once the garter is removed it is tossed to the single and unmarried men and whoever catches it is traditionally the next in-line to get married.

Jimi Hendrix - Foxy Lady

Weather Girls - It's Raining Men

Inner Circle - Bad Boys

ZZ Top - Legs

Marvin Gaye - Let's get it on

Last Dancing Songs

These last couple of songs for the night should be a climax to a great celebration that everybody can dance to.

Farewell Music

The farewell music can be 2 or 3 of the Bride and Grooms favourite songs. These are the songs played whilst the Bride and Groom farewell their guests via a circle or bridal archway (Made by the guests). Some song suggestions are..

Extreme - More than words

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Somewhere over the Rainbow

Green Day - Time of your life

Jack Johnson - The Sharing Song

Lior - This old love

Whatever songs and genres you choose for your wedding reception, make sure they reflect your own style and at the same time will be appropriate for your guests to enjoy themselves at the celebration of your wedding. Good luck with your planning!

Cheers, Adrian Makarov

Ultimate Santana

2008 reissue housed in a deluxe cardboard slipcase. This single disc anthology brings the legendary guitarist's best recordings of his Arista Records era together with his greatest classics from the Columbia Records years on a single compact disc. Among the 18 tracks are the chart toppers 'Smooth', 'Maria Maria', 'Black Magic Woman', 'The Game Of Love' (with both Michelle Branch and Tina Turner), 'Oye Como Va' and many more. Sony/BMG.
Customer Review: big mistake
YUK! I just recently started downloading mp3s and really screwed up when I bought this thinking it would be the Carlos Santana music I knew in the 60s. What else would "Ulitmate Santana" mean? Instead most of the album is just Santana accompanying some bozo singing stupid disco type songs. My bad. Remember, when it says "featuring so-and-so" it usually means you better like so-and-so and not care too much about who the titled performer is.
Customer Review: Great songs, but...
Carlos Santana has very few bad albums, or even bad songs. (Stay away from his collaboration with John McLaughlin though.) If you're looking for a one-disk compilation and are familiar with his later songs plus his late 60's hits, the songs here will be familiar. But... try Caravanserai, Borboletta, or some of his other unbelievable albums from "in between". If this is all you know of Carlos Santana, you have a lot to discover! What you hear on this disk is just an introduction. I give this review 4 stars rather than 5 not because there are bad songs on this CD (there aren't), but because you, as a Santana listener, deserve more.

Bruny Surin was born on July 12, 1967 in Cap Haitien, Haiti. However, he moved to Canada when he was seven years old. Who is Surin? He is one of the best sprinters of the 20th century. He once said: ""Getting to work in the field you want to work in is such luck ... It's a privilege. The 100 metres and the 4x100 metre relay have given me a chance to push my limits, to go down into the core of myself to find the strength to achieve my goals. I think perseverence is the key to my success. When things went badly, the disappointment was a source of motivation." Like many foreign-born Canadians, Bruny loves his country. He established the Bruny Surin Foundation, which is dedicated to helping children in need with education and physical health. Currently, he is Goodwill Ambassador for Quebec (Canada).
